Slow Start

2024-03-01

Early Thursday morning a report out of Denver claimed to have a leaked message from Kirklan Lycar sent out to other EHE general managers “Fire sale in Colorado. I can’t take the losing anymore, everyone is available.” Despite declining to comment on the message, the silence surrounding the squad has been deafening.

After a 3-9-1 start to the season, naturally the rumour mill has began to churn in Denver. Now with the leaked message, you can say fuel has been added to the fire. Despite the rumours Lycar and Montgomery though, surprisingly seem very composed.

When asked about the slow start Montgomery had this to say “I think all teams go through rough patches in a season, cup contenders, middle of the pack teams. No one is immune to it, just so happens ours is right at the beginning of the season so its magnified”

Though Lycar declined to comment specifically on the leaked texts, he did somewhat put things to rest “We’re always looking to improve the roster, we’re happy with the team we’ve built though. Sometimes things are said in the heat of battle, you want me to sit here and say I’m okay with losing? Of course I’m not. We’re going to stick with it and get to where we expect to be.”

It’s often said that teams outside of the playoff picture after the first 20 games have very long odds to make the playoffs, Lycar however does not see it that way. “We have 69 games left, we project needing around 90 points to get in. If we can win 40 of our next 69 games, we are there, it’s not that lofty at all But it’s about one game at a time, we can’t do anything to erase the first 13 but we can certainly make efforts to stop compounding the losses. It’s what I expect out of Monty and the group.”

Lycar refused to place the blame solely on the duo of Jordan Binnington and Jonas Korpisalo. “We’ve allowed 59 goals in 13 games, of course it’s about team defence and not just our goaltending. We need to be better across the board.”

Things won’t get any easier for the Avs as they welcome to town tonight the red hot St. Louis Blues who are currently riding an 11 game win streak.

“If there were ever a time to put your foot down and say enough is enough, tonight would be a massive statement against a very good and very hot team. I believe in our guys.”
