Jon Cooper Joins Sharks

2020-09-22

The San Jose Sharks have signed one of the top coaches today in Jon Cooper, he's signed to a 3 year deal worth five million dollars per year. Jon has been at the helm of the Vancouver Canucks since the beginning of the EHE, spending 6 seasons there and collecting 233 regulation wins along the way. He made the playoffs in his first three seasons with the Canucks, but has been out of the post season for the last three seasons.

"This will be a good opportunity to take veteran team on the verge and input a winning pedigree." Said Jon Cooper today when intorduced to the media. "I've already reached out to some of the players and am thrilled with the enthusiasm shown, they are willing to put in the work to put this team over the top."

That's not the only news this week, the team has traded top 6 forward Pavel Buchnevich to the Buffalo Sabres for Jamie Oleksiak, Martin Kaut, and a second round pick 46th overall pick in this years draft. "You want to put your mark on a team when taking over as GM" Quipped GM Mitchell "But you also have to find a balance, I believe this deal doesn't hurt us in the short term and gives us a bit of a healthier outlook in the future."

Lets meet your new Sharks:

Jamie Oleksiak is a defensive defenceman with good instincts on when to pinch and when to retreat. He's a decent skater for his size, coming in at a towering 6'7". He's likely to occupy the left side of the 3rd D pairing this coming season.

Martin Kaut was picked 18th overall in the 2018 EHE entry draft, so he's young and still developing. Right now he's penciled in as the teams RW on the 4th line, but that spot is not solidified and he will have to earn it in pre-season. He's got some two-way ability, skates well, has an NHL level shot already and is good with utilizing his teammates. As with any young player, he'll need to get more consistant shift to shift and continue to work on his conditioning.

Rumours are swirling around San Jose this off-season as more changes may be coming. We're hearing the team would like to move Dman Troy Stecher for an older, more established Dman as well as young RW Christian Fischer for an established veteran RW.
